photography is an adventure
Photography is an adventure just as life is an adventure. If man which is to express himself photographically, he must understand, surely to a certain extent, his relationship to life. I am interested in relating the problems that affect me to some set of values that I am trying to discover and establishes being my life. I want to discover and establish them through photography.
-Harry Callahan
Detroit 1941 through 1945
One of the first photography books I was given was of Harry Callahan’s work. This quote was found in the first few pages. It has been a quote that I go back to and use in my own artistic practice.
An image begins with a loose concept and often as I add a new image into the collage a whole new meaning is revealed. I am always amazed at how the work helps me discover new things about life, and myself. I find that these personal discoveries are gifts that the work gives to me and me alone. They don’t often translate to others as they view my work. I love that my images can connect with others as well as hold something back that is private just for me. I believe this can be an ongoing process as we are constantly seeing through the lens of our present moment. Each viewing of the work provides a new context, which in turn, creates new meaning. Great images have the ablity for constant renewal and discovery.
